A whopping 12 percent increase in the graduation rate has Blackford School personnel very happy because it’s an issue on which they have been working diligently.
The Indiana Department of Education released graduation rates for Indiana schools today, showing Blackford County Schools with an 87 percent graudation rate for 2009.
The state average for 2009 also increased, but only by just more than 3 percent, from 77.8 percent in 2008 to 81 percent for last year.
In 2007, the local rate was 71.5 percent and in 2008 it was 75.4 percent, according to the report.
“It is a very nice report,” said Ken Kline, Blackford County Schools superintendent. “We’re getting better.”
Kline, who was in his first year as superintendent in 2009--which is the period covered by this report--attributes the higher graduation rate to several programs that have been started at Blackford High School.
One is the credit recovery program through which students can take a class online. “There are several students who did not graduate on time who were able to to take the classes during the summer and graduate,” he explained.
Another program allows students to repeat a class after school when the class is needed to graduate. “We’ve got some students doing that. It has helped a lot,” Kline said.
